Virginia DMV notices

Required notices and course information for our 8-hour Virginia Online Driver Improvement Course. These notices do not describe our separate 4-hour Reckless and Aggressive Driving Course.

Last updated October 2026

Before you enroll

To benefit from the course, you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.

The online driver improvement course and final test must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver improvement clinic. No paper test is permitted.

The online driver improvement clinic course is an eight-hour course, including the final test, and is designed to rehabilitate problem drivers. The course must be completed in its entirety prior to the issuance of a certificate of completion.

Identity verification

Student identification will be verified throughout training and prior to taking the final test to ensure that the person taking the course is the same person taking the final test.

You will upload a government-issued photo ID for the school to review. During the course, you will also complete three brief identity checks, including one before the final test. Each check asks two questions based on your enrollment information. Your identity must be verified before your certificate is issued. Contact us if you need help completing a check.

Completing the course and the final test

Enroll and pay online, then sign in to begin. Take the course on your phone, tablet, or computer. Your progress is saved, so you can stop and return later. Complete the lessons in order and meet the required study time. Answer each knowledge-check question correctly before moving forward.

The final test becomes available after you complete the lessons, their required study time, and the identity checks. It has 50 questions, and you must answer at least 40 correctly to pass. Questions and answer choices appear in random order. Final test retakes are included at no extra charge. You may attempt the final test once per business day.

You must complete the full eight-hour requirement, including the final test, before your certificate can be issued.

Court-directed students

Customers directed by the Court must provide documentation from the court before safe driving points can be awarded.

Before enrolling, confirm that the court accepts this course and the online format. If the court authorizes safe-driving points, provide the documentation showing that authorization.

Your certificate

The certificate of completion will be electronically transmitted to all individuals upon successful completion of the course within 24 hours.

The DMV standardized certificate, “Online Driver Improvement Clinic Certificate of Completion (DIC 552B)”, is the only document that will be accepted by the Department and the Courts as proof of completion of an online driver improvement clinic.

If the certificate is presented to DMV, it must be printed on 8 1/2 x 11 plain white bonded paper. DMV will not accept certificates printed on color or special designed paper or paper with any form of advertisement on the front or back of the certificate. DMV will not accept any certificates that have been altered in any way.

Your certificate is emailed automatically after all course requirements are met and the school has verified your identity. There is no additional certificate fee.
